All is vanity

new-vanityI couldn’t resist the scripture reference.  After all, it is Sunday morning.

Seriously, I think the vanity you see in the picture is one of the nicest pieces we’ve ever done.  It started with a 50’s era Early American vanity/dresser.  I stripped and resurfaced the top and drawer fronts and stained them dark walnut.  Cindy created the distressed gray/blue finish on the other surfaces with a combination of chalk paints, stain and wax.  the result was incredible.

Now the only problem is convincing myself not to move it into the house and keep it.  But, for the moment, it is for sale.  Drop us a comment if you are interested.

Man Cave Essential

If you have a man cave, this is the offering you’ve been waiting for.

Last fall we found an old pump organ base at a sale.  It took a great deal of restructuring and finishing, but the results speak for themselves.

If you are interested in another one of a kind piece, drop us a comment.

Not Just For Fences

We have a couple of new offerings.  It all started when I found some old fence posts at a sale.  Most of our creativity is driven entirely by the things we are able to salvage.  Those bits and pieces start the creative juices flowing.  Two one of a kind items sprang from those old fence posts.  The bar below has the fence posts as well as an old door from a Belle Meade home.  It has been cut down and professionally refinished.  The fence post shelf unit has a rustic cedar top.  Drop us a comment if you want to make an offer or stop by to see them.

Haying Time

We were at an estate sale yesterday Haying Timeat an old home in Green Hills.  This house had a dozen little hideaways in it.  While searching through the stuff in the basement, I found an old picture titled : Haying Time – The Last Load.  It was a reprint from an 1800’s Currier and Ives lithograph. I really liked the rustic look it had.   When we got home, I started making a frame for it from old barn wood.  As I pulled it from the original frame, it wasn’t a print at all.  It was a calendar page from June 1954.  Evidently it was just as striking to someone then as it is to me now.  But, all said, it does make a beautiful rustic wall hanging.

This and many other pieces will be available at our next sale, which is tentatively set for May 14.  Before then, if you are interested in any of the items pictured on this site, drop us a comment.

Don’t Miss It

We are having the biggest sale of the year at our house Friday and Saturday, 4/8-9/16.  Our address is 574 Annex Court, Nashville, TN 37209.  Pictured here are just a few of the new creations that will be available and priced to sell.  See you there!

Emerging from Hibernation

We’ve been quiet for the last several months, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t added several new creations during the “hibernation” period.

Pictured here is a quirky china hutch I built.  Like almost all of our items, it has been created entirely from salvaged and re-purposed material.   As usual, Cindy has done a beautiful job of finishing and staging.  We will have this item and many more at our first sale of the year in a couple of weeks.

How Do You Like Me Now?

This is the trunk from the previous posting.  It has been cleaned, the wood lightly refinished, and sealed with polyurethane(several coats) inside and out.  Cindy didn’t want to restore it, but instead, to arrest the patina by sealing it thoroughly.  The original artwork inside is beautiful.  Just like Clark Griswold’s tree, “It’s going in our living room, Russ”.  Oh, by the way, that means my beautiful rustic coffee table will be for sale now.

Garage Sale Gold

If you do this long enough, you find a few gems in piles of junk.  I found this old steamer trunk at an old house they were cleaning out to sell.  When Cindy saw it, she immediately said, “We’re not selling it”!  So much for my vision of a handsome profit.  I guess it really is a keeper.

A Lesson in Transformation

I keep learning the same lesson over and over.  It seems I suffer from limited vision. Let me explain.  When Cindy bought the chest of drawers in the picture, I said, “Why in the world do you want this thing, and what can you possibly do with it”.  Well, once again, I’m sitting here with “limited vision egg” smeared all over my face.  I’ve been taught yet another lesson in transformation , as you can see in the before and after pictures.

This turned out to be a beautiful piece of work.  If you like it, leave us a comment and we’ll arrange for you to see it.
